Microsoft recently released task labels in Microsoft Project for the web, giving users a more engaging way to view projects and tag or categorize tasks.

If you’re a fan of Microsoft Planner, then this new feature in Microsoft Project for the web will look familiar.

How to add custom Labels in Microsoft Project for the web

As shown in the figure below, when you “Open details” from a Task, you can click on the ‘Add Label’ to load the label drop down menu. With the pencil icon you can edit the label name, using one of the 25 label color choices. Multiple labels can be added to one task, and editing the label for an individual task will update that label for the whole project.

Once the labels are associated with tasks, you can filter the tasks by their corresponding labels.

In the ‘Board View’, you can group tasks by Labels for a more visual layout of your projects.

Task Labels provide a level of visibility into how tasks within a project are related, giving the project manager added flexibility over grouping tasks for prioritization.
